History of user activity on SharePoint

Not so much people know that SharePoint allows for file auditing, focusing on file operations restricted to specific types of actions and specific users. If you are a SharePoint service administrator, you can easily initiate such an audit.

To start, access the Microsoft Purview administration panel and, after logging in, choose the Audit section on the left-hand side.

The next step will be to define search parameters. We need to establish:
– timeframes
– types of activities
– keywords
– user
– site name or folder to limit the search to

For the purpose of this post, I filtered the results as shown below, selecting a specific time range, a particular user, and specific operations (fileaccessed, filecopied, filedeleted, filedeletedfirststagerecyclebin, filedownloaded, filemodified, filerecycled, filerenamed, filerestored, fileuploaded).

After completion, our search will appear on the list with a completed status.

Upon accessing the search results, you will encounter a view similar to the one shown. My search is just an example, focusing on a user who doesn’t edit too many files.

In addition to these detailed on-demand statistics, we have general statistics available on the main page of the SharePoint admin center at: https://<tenantName>-admin.sharepoint.com.

These are overall statistics regarding space utilization across the entire storage.
